Tumu Forest District: 2021 Green Ghana Project

The United Nations General Assembly on 28th February, 2012 declared 21st March of every year as International Day of Forests. Member Countries were given the option to celebrate this occasion depending on the rainfall pattern of their geographical areas. Ghana last year under His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo chose 11th June, 2021 to celebrate the occasion under the code name "The Green Ghana Day Project ". 5 million trees was set as target and distributed across the 16 Regions of Ghana. Upper West Region's target was 150,000 trees which was shared among Lawra and Tumu Forest Districts. Tumu Forest District's (Sissala East and West) portion of the 150,000 was 70,000 but in the end, Tumu was able to plant 101, 250 trees, 30,000 more than the target. 65,345 tree seedlings of various species were planted in Sissala East: 10,200 trees planted in the Tumu Forest Reserve and 55,145 trees were planted in the off-reserve areas. 35,905 tree seedlings were planted in Sissala West.

The post planting audit carried out by 3 independent institutions scored 85% success for Tumu Forest District.
